My Nonno took so much pride in growing his own fruit. His beloved pear tree stood proudly in the backyard. Every fall he would harvest the pears and sit at the head of the table slicing them in quarters after our Sunday dinner. He would offer a pear slice to everyone in his line of vision and say in broken English , “Did you try? Es tender.” I swear, Nonno described every fruit as “tender” and “shhhweet” — these words never failed to make me smile; they were the most wholesome words to hear with his Italian accent.
